CHAPTER ELEVEN

Amy couldn’t believe what was happening. There were no other cars in the parking lot.

“You’ve got to call the police,” Jocelyn said. “I left my purse in your car.”

Amy pulled out her cell phone to dial the cops.

It was dead.

“Oh man,” Amy said. “This is not good.”

“Maybe the worker inside has a –“ They heard the sound of tires squealing around the back of the building and ran to catch her. The clerk drove off going forty in the parking lot. “Cell phone. Or not,” Jocelyn finished.

“It was a nice thought,” Amy said to her. “Oh my goodness.”

“Don’t you just want to yell fuck?!” Jocelyn asked. “You never curse.”

She shrugged. “Bad habit I picked up as a kid in an ultra-conservative household. Never curse, never take the Lord’s name in vain.” Then Amy burst out laughing and Jocelyn joined her. “Me being a lesbian wasn’t something they could change, though, much to my mother’s chagrin.”

Jocelyn was guffawing. They leaned against one another, laughing.

“What are we going to do?” she asked.

“Walk,” Amy said. She glanced at Jocelyn’s shoes. “Don’t tell me I’ll have to carry you.”

“I would perform open heart surgery in five inch heels if I could,” Jocelyn said. “I can walk at least a mile in these shoes.”

“Good, because a lot of cabs don’t come this way,” Amy replied. “We should go to the police station at the end of the Strip.”

They set off for the Strip, the lights blinking in the distance.

“Is this your first time in Vegas?” Amy asked Jocelyn, her heels clicking on the dirty sidewalk as cars passed them by.

“No,” she said. “I came once for a medical conference but didn’t do a lot of exploring. How long have you lived here?”

“Just about four years,” Amy said. “Since medical school started. I’ll be getting my match soon for my internship.”

“Are you nervous?”

Amy shrugged. “Only every single second of every single day.”

Jocelyn laughed. “I drank more on match day than any other day of my life. I was so stressed that Chad and I would end up on opposite sides of the country.” She shook her head. “Guess it didn’t matter in the long run.”

“What exactly happened with Chad?” Amy paused. “I mean, if you don’t mind talking about it.”

She cleared her throat. “He cheated on me. Told me this morning, actually, on my way out here. I was supposed to fly here for a couple of days, then to Hawaii for the wedding.”

“This morning? Did you tell people? They have to cancel their tickets! I’d be freaking out if I were you.”

Jocelyn shrugged. “Let them freak out. I figure how angry can they be? They’re getting a trip to Hawaii out of it, so what’s the big deal?”

“Won’t your parents freak out?”

“Eh, you know. They’ll deal with it in their own way in their own time. I’m not too terribly worried about it, to tell you the truth. I figure Chad’s the one who cheated. He can tell everybody the wedding is off and why.
